I'm so glad you could stop by. This is my personal blog of daily life and my journey through life. You will find a strong emphasis on family and friends as well as finding my ancestors through genealogy. Unlike my other blogs this blog is more of a catch-all so any topic is fair game.

Plant City Wall Mural

During our recent vacation we made several side trips to do a bit of shopping and sightseeing.  Plant City, Florida is located in Hillsborough County, Florida off of Interstate 4 just south on Highway 92.  It is known as the winter strawberry capital of the world hosting the annual Florida Strawberry Festive in February or early March.  This even is attended by people from all over the United States as well as worldwide.  Plant City is a picturesque town a bit on the quaint side yet touristy.  There are several antique and second hand resale shops in the downtown area that is has cobblestone pavement on the streets.  I just had to have a picture of their gorgeous wall mural that spans the entire lower level side of one of the businesses.  A small, well kept park with benches and a fountain are set in front beckoning you to sit a spell.  There is a small parking lot as well so you can browse a few of the quaint stores.

Days Gone By

Days Gone By
October 30, 2009

I am a serious sucker for any wall art. I don't know why exactly but there is just something that fascinates me about it. Perhaps it it the size or the detail or just it strikes my fancy. This particular wall art is a bit bitter sweet as it is on the side of a restaurant that was part of a chain that went under. We were first introduced to the restaurant by friends of ours and it quickly became the place the four of us chose to eat. It was laid back, comfortable and served excellent foods. We shared many a fine moment there enjoying good food and good company. Like anything all good things must come to an end. Unfortunately this restaurant chain was a victim of the recent/current recession so they closed their doors. I had a chance to take a picture of the outside of the building, now lonely and abandoned the other day. It was a sad photoshoot as I snapped multiple pictures of an empty building devoid of all signage other than the wall art. Somehow the wall art just captured what I was feeling will taking the pictures. May we always remember the days gone by fondly even though the structural attributes may be missing!

Coral Reef Mural

Coral Reef Mural
Key West
January 16, 2007

Wall art has always fascinated me right from the time I can remember. I am rather partial to old advertising on brick facades that more and more are being restored for historical value. However, any kind of wall art will get my attention including graffetti. This type of art as with any art is always conveying something from the artist that they want to share with others. It can be a message, a feeling, an advertisement or anything thing in between. I will go out of my way to get pictures of these gems so was quite excited to discover an original mural by Wyland on the Waterfront Market/Reef Relief in Key West. The building sits on the corner of William Street and the mural wraps around two sides of it (not shown). Artist Guy Harvey contributed to the painting in the later stages. This mural replaces a mural Wyland completed at the same location in 1993. The new mural was unveiled on September 29, 2003. The photo is of one side of the mural only. As you can see the colours are stunning and so appropriate for the Key West landscape!

Wall Art

wall art in Windsor, Ontario
Windsor, Ontario

I am fascinated by wall art on buildings! It goes beyond just societal approved forms as I have to admit to being fascinated by wall art done by street artists aka graffiti. One form of wall art that I am very interested in are old ads painted on historical buildings. So I take pictures every time I can. I have a nice collection of images with dates, locations and other interesting information such as building. People have such an inherent desire to share and express themselves in whatever form they can. Wall art fills that need while expressing individuality.

I thought this wall art on an apartment building in Windsor, Ontario was impressive. The art is complicated in that it shows four pictorial views in post card format from historical views, something I truly appreciate. The artist takes advantage of subject, depth and movement in a very effective way. The attention to detail is beautiful as are the colours. Kudos to the artist for creating such a wonderful piece of wall art!

From a historical perspective, wall art has been used for many reasons. In my genealogy research much of the wall art was used as an inexpensive way of advertising. Some of the old wall art was amazingly detailed in design. My communities have recognized these special paintings on buildings and have untaken restoring them. Sadly some do not appreciate the beauty of the art or the painstaking time it takes to restore them not to mention the cost. Recently in a nearby community one such restored painting on a historical building was vandalized. What a horrible shame and act of cowardice!

The next time you see wall art whether societal approved or graffiti, take a few minutes to marvel at the uniqueness and ponder what it is the artist was trying to convey. Marvel at those old ads painted on buildings. These are part of our past, a bit of a legacy left to us from those who went before us!
