I'm so glad you could stop by. This is my personal blog of daily life and my journey through life. You will find a strong emphasis on family and friends as well as finding my ancestors through genealogy. Unlike my other blogs this blog is more of a catch-all so any topic is fair game.

Blog Your Blessings Sunday - An Incredible Journey

Blog Your Blessings Sunday

We were teenagers when we became newlyweds with the odds stacked against us but we had faith that with enough love everything would fall into place.  Our love for each other has never waivered, growing stronger every day.  We've been blessed with amazing children who have gone onto higher education and then start their own families, blessing us with the most adorable grandchildren you have ever seen.  We have been blessed in establishing a business that supports our lifestyle nicely while affording the opportunity for us to enjoy the freedom from working for others creating the flexibility we want to be able to take the time off to enjoy our family and friends as we see fit.  I have been particularly blessed to have enjoyed the opportunity for higher education, having earned three pot-graduate degrees and one diploma in honours standing while having the extreme priveledge of meeting some of the world's top notch scientists.  We have absolutely wonderful family and friends that never let us down, always there through the good and bad times, never waivering in their support.  We have never gone hungry, always had a roof over our heads as well as the skills and knowledge to provide for ourselves.

Yes, life has dealt us some rather nasty blows, likely more than many will ever have to deal with but at the same time not as bad as some have to deal with either.  Though it all we have the blessing of each other, knowing we can depend on each other and we have the blessing of our family and friends.  That makes us the richest people on earth!

Blog Your Blessings Sunday - Help From Family and Friends

Blog Your Blessings Sunday

My husband and I were full of anticipation waiting for the keys to our new house on September 1.  Now legally the house is not in our name until September 15 but we took an early possession because at this point everything is merely a formality now.  We put the word out that we were starting the move on the first and taking up to the fifteenth to finish.  In reality we will be fully moved by the sixth with nothing more to do at the old house other than do any necessary cleaning.  Friends and family were right there ready to help!  We are so very, very blessed to have such a strong support system in our family and friends.  They are absolutely amazing!

Blog Your Blessings Sunday - A Diagnosis

A very good friend of ours became quite sick ok the tail end of a camping. We were very concerned. Despite trips to ER,several and medical tests it took 25 days to finally get a diamosis. He has West Nile Disease! Treatment has begun and he is still in the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery. It will take about three months to feel back to his old self. What a blessing to get a diagnosis! It was best news last week. We are so elated.

Blog Your Blessing Sunday - Family & Friends

Blog Your Blessings Sunday

Wow, what an absolutely wonderful week spent with family and friends!  We had a chance to visit with all three grandkids and their parents this past week.  Our grandkids are the sweetest blessings ever.  I thought being blessed with kids was amazing, watching them grow to become the wonderful adults they are even more amazing but oh my gosh grandkids are the icing on the cake!

And then there's our friends.  They are some of best folks you could ever meet.  They would not hesitate to give you the shirt of their back.  They are always there for us, never wavering in good times and even stronger in bad times.  Believe me we are so blessed to have such true friends that are always there, that we can rely on anytime and you know are just wonderful people about as close to family as you can get!

It was a wonderful week!

Community Fireworks

fireworks

Fireworks
July 1, 2011

As newlyweds we decided that buying fireworks for a personal display was not a frugal use of our funds.  I can recall only once where we gave into the pleas of our kids to by a few fireworks and a couple of occasions of buying sparklers.  Many communities have a fireworks display for July 1, Canada Day.  We seldom attend though.  I guess it is something we never got into and living in smaller communities it is easy to see any fireworks anyway.  This past Canada Day we attended the community fireworks display.  A large group of us gathered on the lawn of one of our friends where we had a wonderful view of the fireworks.  It was a very pleasant way to spend the evening!

Mexican Train

Mexican Train
Mexican Train
December 15, 2010

We play a lot of card and board games.  Both are good sources for at home entertainment with family and friends.  Mexican Train is a domino game that we recently discovered.  It is suitable for ages 6 and older so a nice game to play across generations.  The game starts with whoever has the highest double in the centre.  Each player starts their own train using a domino from that double so if the starting domino is 12 then each player starts with a 12.  If they don't have a 12 then they have to pick up another domino.  Each player builds on their train but if they can't add to their train they put a train piece on their train spot for others to add to their train until they can make a move again.  Oh and if a player gets to one domino left there is a button to push that activates the choo-choo song.  It is a fun game, that's for sure!

Blog Your Blessings Sunday - More House Guests

Blog Your Blessings Sunday

Over the past two weeks we have had two groups of house guests with the groups overlapping by a day so it has been quite busy but fun.  This past week we shared a lot of laughs and good food with great friends!  We did a good bit of sight seeing.  It was nice just enjoying their company!  What a blessing it is to have such wonderful friends.

Blog Your Blessings Sunday - House Guests

Blog Your Blessings Sunday

This past week we have had house guests for the entire week.  House guests are different than the visiting for an evening guests.  With house guests you get to see them first thing in the morning before the coffee has clicked in and the tongue starts working let alone the brain.  It brings a whole new level of tolerance that sometimes is achieved through gritting the teeth and biting the tongue rather than saying something to cause hard feelings.  At the same time it gives the opportunity to fine tune our entertaining skills.  We are very blessed to be able to share our lives with others this way.  It adds an additional element to enrich our lives!

Getting the Wind Knocked Out of Your Sails

I tend to be an extremely good judge of character.  That ability has always served me very well.  Yesterday someone I considered a friend said something that seriously knocked the wind out of my sails.  I won't go into detail but I will say that at best I was shocked and went into retreat mode.  I think what really bothers me is this is someone I trusted and welcomed into our home.  To hear that type of comment totally floored me!  I honestly cannot believe that someone in this day and age with all we know can be that horribly ignorant.  And life goes on, another lesson learned...

Blog Your Blessings Sunday - Rain, Family & Friends

Blog Your Blessings Sunday

This past week started out to be so very hot and humid but full of blessings.  Lack of rainfall this summer has been a real issue for local farmers and home gardeners.  Wednesday, the day we were hosting a large dinner party, the forecaste was hot, humid and thunderstorms.  It rained during the wee hours of Wednesday morning and a bit during the day but cleared enough to enjoy eating outdoors for the dinner party then it rained overnight.  Thursday and Friday we woke to more rain with clearing in the afternoon.  The rain was very much welcomed!

The dinner party was a huge success!   The event was not without a bit of sadness though as we found out one of our friends who did not attend had recently been very, very sick resulting in the partial amputation of her leg.  Our support, thoughts and prayers are with her and her family as she goes through the healing process!

On Friday a couple of our kids arrived with our second grandbaby, now a very energetic toddler, to spend a couple of days.  This little one is just a real hoot!  Those great big, brown winkers remind me so much of one of parents at that age and you know Grandmas and Papas are very prone to falling under the spell of the huge puppy dog looks grandbabies can give.  The following morning a couple more of our kids arrived for brunch with oldest and youngest grandbabies.  We try to get together this way as often as possible.  Not only do we get to enjoy our kids and grandbabies, the grandbabies get to enjoy a strong family support system.  I think it is wonderful that our grandbabies do play dates together and get lots of interaction so not only are the cousins they are friends, just as their parents are friends with their sibs.  All in all there were many blessings all around!

I Wish You Enough

[from my email files.  I have taken the liberty of adding a custom made graphic that is © by me but do not know the author of the inspirational piece so have marked it as author unknown.]

----

Recently I overheard a Father and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure.

Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the Father said, 'I love you, and I wish you enough.'

The daughter replied, 'Dad, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Dad.'

They kissed and the daughter left. The Father walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking, 'Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?'

'Yes, I have,' I replied. 'Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?'..

'I am old, and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral,' he said.

'When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough.' May I ask what that means?'

He began to smile. 'That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone...' He paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and he smiled even more. 'When we said, 'I wish you enough,' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.' Then turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory.

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

He then began to cry and walked away.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them; but then an entire life to forget them.

Only if you wish, send this to the people you will never forget and remember to send it back to the person who sent it to you. If you don't send it to anyone it may mean that you are in such a hurry that you have forgotten your friends.

TAKE TIME TO LIVE....

To all my friends and loved ones, I WISH YOU ENOUGH.

The focus of last week's blessings was very much family and friends. You know family and friends are two of life's greatest blessing. They should be cherished and nurtured! Without either you really have nothing.

Condolences to Our Family and Friends

Sorry everyone, I am just numb right now. Yesterday we got the call of a death in the family so there has been a lot of communication going back and forth. We will attend visitation tonight and the funeral tomorrow. Then today we get a call from a very good friend who's mother just passed away. We will be at her visitation on Sunday and funeral Monday. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to each of their families as they go through this necessary journey in life.

But I don't have a water bowl???

I received the following from a friend and thought I would pass it along. Thanks friend for sharing this wonderful story with me. You are always welcomed at my water bowl :) I've taken the creative liberty of adding a graphic for you.

-----

This explains why we forward jokes.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up."
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is Heaven," he answered.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?! "

"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

Soooo...

Sometimes, we wonder why friends keep forwarding jokes to us without writing a word.

Maybe this will explain.

When you are very busy, but still want to keep in touch, guess what you do? You forward jokes.

When you have nothing to say, but still want to keep contact, you forward jokes.

When you have something to say, but don't know what, and don't know how, you forward jokes.

Also to let you know that you are still remembered, you are still important, you are still loved, you are still cared for, guess what you get?

A forwarded joke.
So, next time if you get a joke, don't think that you've been sent just another forwarded joke, but that you've been thought of today and your friend on the other end of your computer wanted to send you a smile.

You are all welcome at my water bowl anytime.

Friends & Family

This time of the year everyone seems to bustling about buying into the consumerism ideal and glitter of the holiday season. They are so absorbed they forget to say please or thank-you, they forget to be courteous and considerate drivers and they forget that family and friends are more that about buying the latest, greatest whatever. They forget the true meaning of Christmas. I'm sorry but this is one of the things I detest the most about the holiday season and it will always put me in a horrible mood so I deal with it by avoidance.

I love spending time with family and friends anytime of the year but during the holiday season it always seems a bit more special. Last week we visited the kids in Wisconsin knowing for the first time since our kid was born we physically would not be present Christmas day. Since then we have talked several times on the phone and will be calling Christmas day because even though we won't be there physically we will be there is spirit. Christmas morning the phone will be passed around amongst the sibs and their spouses spreading the love that no present could ever replace.

Times are changing so it is easier for Grandma and Grandpa to travel this year than it is for the kids with little ones. We will wake once again to the excitement of little ones because Santa came. In our eyes we will relive the memories of Christmas mornings when our kids were little while forming new memories as the little ones discover their meaning of Christmas. Oldest grandbaby was home this weekend. Presents under the tree were all toys and Grandma's Christmas lights had to be on even during the day. Still pushing Grandpa's button to turn him on [a mole on Grandpa's neck that when pushed springs him into Grandpa mode] and helping Grandma in the kitchen as well as sampling Grandma's homemade cookies were the high priority. I have to tell you there is no present in the world that could replace the memories of raising our own kids then being able to share in the lives of our grandkids. Family is something so many take for granted without realizing what a true blessing they have!

Friday night we hosted a larger holiday party for friends. It would have been larger but the weather did not co-operate. One couple in attendance has been friends since the time we were double dating all those years ago before we got married. They are still our best friends and we wouldn't have it any other way. If you talk about old friends being gold this couple is 24 carrot in every sense of being friends. They have been there through all the ups and downs. Their kids played with our kids and all the kids remain friends. Like us, their marriage is strong and they work hard to be good, supportive examples to their kids as they begin their lives as grand parents. They are a true blessing in our lives that could never be replaced! Other friends in attendance are what we would consider both gold and silver because we haven't known them as long but they would drop everything to come to our aid if we needed it. They bring warmth, laughter, support and companionship into our lives. Friends are blessings that just can't be replaced.

So in this time of holiday hustle and bustle, stop to count your blessings. Your family and true friends don't care whether or not you can give them a gift. They don't care if you they drop by and you are still in your pj's or if you have gourmet coffee or if you even brushed your hair. They care about you! They care about how they can help you, how they can support you, making you happy, how you are doing and simply sharing in your life. And that is a true blessing. The best thing you can give in return is to be a caring and supportive family member as well as a true friend. Share your smile, your compassion, your advice (in small doses), your support and simply share yourself.

Happy Blog Your Blessings Sunday, the last one before Christmas. May you enjoy all the blessings your loved ones have to offer. May you repay those blessing ten fold! It is the greatest gift you can give and it costs nothing :)

toxic people

Here's Waldo!
Oct. 10, 2008

If you have followed this blog you will know I love wall art so I'm going to make a few comments before going onto the main topic for this entry. We found Waldo! He was on one of the bridge abutments on the lift bridge we had to go under before reaching the marina. As wall art goes this one is striking because of the contrast however it loses a lot of points because it is obviously a stencil and really not a well done one. It was cute though.

Friday night we settled in at the marina enjoying the beautiful Indian summer. Saturday a couple of late arrivers docked. Well within 10 minutes of docking one of the women who we have know for a few years and her husband is a real sweetheart made it very clear that she was greatly aggigated but this time I was the object of her furry! I managed to say hi when she just flew off. Without saying a word I got my husband's eye and we headed back to the boat where I talked. We figured it was just a fluke because we had seen this type of behaviour from her in the past. Nope, it wasn't a fluke and by the time we left she actually had her little group of girls over by themselves doing that childish schoolyard thing that mean "I'm talking about you and you aren't part of the in group" thing, I seriously could not believe this and that is just for being polite and saying hi? She was horribly nasty making snide remarks anytime I was in her presences. So knowing it had nothing to do with this particular trip, I thought back to the last time we boated and she was there. It was as far as I can figure August of 2007 and again nothing comes to mind that could have set her off. Prior to that it would have been the May long weeked of 2007 and again nothing. So I'm baffled. Neither one of us can come up with any explanation for her sudden vicious and nasty behaviour.

Today I had a chance to reflect and I honestly think she is one who falls into the category that they are not happy unless they are in total control of everything. The moment they aren't, anyone in their pathway is going to get the outfall regardless if there is no reason. They are bitter and always on guard to find fault and reward you with a sharp tongue. She reminds me strongly of some folks I have met online who revel in spreading nastiness and hard feelings. In both cases these are toxic people. They don't care how or who they hurt as long as they inflict pain and quite often I don't even think they know why they are doing so. They aren't happy unless they are hurting others. Every time your thoughts turn to them trying to figure out what the heck set them off yet one more time, they are getting exactly what they want. They are eating at your heart and soul.

I'm sorry but I don't have time to deal with toxic people. Taking the high road is always the best course of action when dealing with toxic people.

through the eyes of a child

We all get cutesy chain letters in our email with the instructions to pass it along. I seldom do this but the following sent to be by a friend is worth passing along through this blog instead of email format. Thanks so much (to a friend)! The following reminds us to be thankful for the true blessings in our lives and that our actions say a lot more about us than our words. I do not know the author of the following but I'm sure I would really like him or her. The focus is on the important things in life, the true blessings, not the material things. The story is a good reminder of the Golden Rule and quite reminds me of my beloved Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories.

~*~*~*~*~*~

The Wooden Bowl

I guarantee you will remember the tale of the Wooden Bowl tomorrow, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now.

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year - old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the
floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. 'We must do something about father,' said the son. 'I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.' So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner.

There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood
scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, 'What are you making?' Just as sweetly, the boy responded, 'Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I
grow up.' The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back
to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for
some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped,
milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

On a positive note, I've learned that, no matter what happens, how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles four things: a rainy day, the elderly, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I've learned that, regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone from your life. I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as making a 'life..' I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you.

But, if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you. I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually
make the right decision. I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone.People love that human touch -- holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn. I've learned that you should pass this on to everyone you care about ...I just did.

Angels have walked beside me all my life

This is to all of you who mean something to me,

I pray for your happiness.

May God richly bless you!

~*~*~*~*~*~

May you have a blessings filled week - a week filled of the true blessings of family and friends, of love and laughter, of faith and hope, of well being and peace!

boaters help boaters

Decker's Landing
July 1, 2008

We are do a lot of boating but that isn't surprising considering we our property backs onto the water. Our main boating grounds are Lakes Huron, St. Clair and Erie along with their connecting waterways and waters emptying into those waterways. We know every good marina and restaurant to stop at in that area when docked. If you want to see pictures from Decker's please read my cooking blog. We're boaters so when I saw Decker's was hosting a special fund raiser, I just had to react:

Decker's is hosting a Margaritaville Weekend Memorial on July 18 and 19, 2008 in memory of Susan Bell, Joe Hamilton and Katy O'Neil who We went to Decker's last week. The one thing about boaters aside of being some of the friendliest folk you have ever met is they stick together and help each other. I saw where they are holding a Margaritaville to raise funds for the children of those who tragically lost their lives in a boating accident on Lake St. Clair on May 24, 2008. Brian Lepp and Robert Diegel were seriously wounded with severe facial injuries. Trust funds have been set up for Austin and Lucas Bell as well as Lydia Hamilton. If you would like more information on this event, would like to book a boat slip or donate to the cause please call Deckers at 1-810-794-0581. Please support this cause if you can.

Not so Good

Autumn Days
September 28, 2007

It has been an extremely eventful week, some good but most not so good. We are on the final countdown to leaving on our winter vacation. So I've been focusing on genealogy and packing. Tuesday I noticed something wasn't quite right so called my doctor duly noting the problem. I did not like what I heard but went in anyway. This has been a problem since the week before Christmas but with so much going on it was rather easy to gloss over. Yesterday my doctor sent me for ultra sound that I have to admit is so much nicer when you are not expecting. As of 1:30 pm yesterday our vacation plans were within a hair of being cancelled. So the end result from something I thought was benign was "probable problem" with "medication" (just what I need) and rather strict restrictions on our travel plans and other activities. Plus I have to go back for more tests the day we get back. So I'm not out of the woods yet but at least I can go. I'm not a happy camper and I will tell you this has been one heck of a wake-up call! Honestly, I eat quite healthy, am reasonably active, live a fair healthy lifestyle SO apparently I did not choose my parents very well. Dang it all, my husband could easily survive on junk food. I'm very particular about what I eat. Who has the cholesterol problem? ME! Despite the pain I got my 30 minute walk in today. Ok, enough about my problems.

We got the phone call that one of our good friends was in a traffic accident Tuesday. He was driving a Toyota (aka coffin on wheels) when he hit a deer. Now my husband hit a deer several years ago and it totaled the car. That car was considerably bigger than a Toyota so even the thoughts give me shudders. Our friend is in intensive care at the trauma centre. He is scheduled for surgery early this upcoming week but they are having a difficult time stabilizing him. The prognosis is dismal at best. We will be cutting our vacation short if we get a call from his wife to say things have worsened. He's way too young!

I'm asking all my internet friends and anyone reading this blog to please send healing thoughts and prayers to our friend. He really needs it now as does his family. Let him know there are many out there thinking about him now and during his (will be) long recovery. Pray that his family will have the strength to help in this process. Please, please even if you don't believe send healing thoughts! Let them enfold him, hold him, heal him. Let him know how much he is loved and needed not only by those here now but also by those to come. Please...
